A remote village in Ghana is bound by idol worship, but the Word of God is on its way
In the remote village of Chillinga, deep in the mountains of Ghana, there are no churches—just precious people steeped in idol worship and spiritual darkness.
But Harriet and Josiah, two OneWay Africa missionaries, are on a mission to change that. Despite strong opposition from village leaders, they are determined to share the life-changing message of Jesus.
To aid their efforts, Pete and Beth Beckman from Chicagoland just completed their 14th trip to Ghana as part of OneWay’s BiblePlus initiative. Over the past two weeks, they’ve worked alongside a dedicated team—including OneWay Africa director Ray Mensah, Jesus Film Riders Cyrus and Clement, and Communications Specialist Marianne Kiel—to record God’s Word in the Akyode and Adele languages.
These new audio Bibles will bring the Gospel to remote communities like Chillinga, where people have no other access to it.
Thanks to generous partners, over 31,000 BiblePlus units have already been distributed across Ghana in 13 languages since 2012. Countless lives have been transformed. Now, thanks to Pete and Beth’s tireless leadership, many more people will hear the life-changing words of God for the first time.
To make these precious words of God accessible to more people groups, the team embarked on a grueling three-hour hike to the remote village where Harriet and Josiah live and work. They showed the Jesus Film, taught Bible stories, and led the children in songs. The children sang and listened intently, but the resistance is still strong from community leaders who see education and faith in Christ as a threat to their idol worship.
Pete shares, “[Leaders] have told residents that if they become educated, they cannot serve the idols spread across the village. Our hearts are broken for the people of Chillinga.”
But there is hope. BiblePlus is bringing the truth of Jesus’ words to break the strongholds of idol worship. Through audio Bibles in the people’s own languages, many are hearing for the first time:
“Come to me, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest.”
“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”
Despite the opposition, dedicated workers like Harriet, Josiah, Pete, Beth and many others remain unwavering in their mission. God’s Word is their greatest weapon, and they continue to labor, believing that through it, many will be set free.
