From cubicles to “closed” countries

Can digital evangelism and prayer make a difference in "closed" countries? These interns found out.

Imagine sharing the gospel with people in a closed country or getting millions to pray for them without ever setting foot there. For Ike Jordan and Andres Gomez, that was their internship experience at OneWay.

Before coming to OneWay, Ike and Andres believed that missions was limited to evangelizing overseas. Both were interested in missions but never saw a place for themselves to serve.

“Coming to OneWay really changed my perspective,” Ike said. “I learned that you could be in missions without being the person on the ground in the country sharing the gospel.”

Andres had a similar realization: “I have this passion for missions and also found out that there are other ways to serve in missions, not only boots on the ground but also finance.”

Andres managed financial workflow projects, edited the Mission Network News daily broadcast and prepared audio for Prayercast videos. As he did each project, Andres realized he grew in more than just professional experience.

“I realize the importance of prayer. I don't think I really took it seriously [before] but the first thing we do [every day] is pray, and that's really motivating for me to continue that once this internship ends.”

Editing audio from international partners allowed him to see the need around the globe from his cubicle in Aurora, Illinois. “I see the importance of knowing what to pray for with MNN and Prayercast. It's important to know what to pray for exactly and what's going on across the globe,” he said.

For the past two summers, Ike was a graphic design intern with the Digital Evangelism team, designing gospel tracts, ministry websites and gospel presentations for people in closed countries.

“Isaiah 55 mentions that you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,” Ike said. “It has really felt like that working at OneWay with Digital Evangelism. These are countries that I've never been to and some of them are ones I’ve barely thought about or considered. Now, they have thousands of [tracts] with my designs floating around. I never thought that I would do something that would have an impact on these countries, yet here we are.”

What a wonderful testimony from these two young men. I am in my 80s, and sadly, though I’ve been in churches with a mission emphasis and have prayed for “missions” for years, I was so insulated here that I didn’t have a passion for the lost of the world that I should have, even though I had friends that went to the mission field! I guess for me, missions meant boots on the ground.About four years ago, a friend of mine who worked with Muslim students in the United States introduced me to Prayercast and it has really opened my eyes to the world of missions. That has led me to become interested in a group established by a friend…
